DESIGNER TALK

Helping shape the dreams we build together, our design partners judel/vrolijk & co and Wetzels Brown Partners draw on long and strong experience in engineering, architecture and creativity. Together in the Contest 49CS they have continued to advance, and taken new steps successfully creating a superbly balanced new aft cockpit concept.

“WITH THIS ADDITIONAL STABILITY, WE ALSO MANAGED A BIGGER, TALLER RIG SO THE SAILING DOESN’T HAVE TO STOP IN LIGHT WINDS... THAT HAS TO BE GOOD.”

OUTSIDE AND IN

Johan Siefer of judel/vrolijk & co says, “The studio process in the new Contest 49CS has again been really interesting in both naval architectural and structural terms. The first aft cockpit design for Contest at this size, it was clear from the brief that we were, it is fair to say, also looking actually at a new concept. An aft cockpit arrangement with unusual on-deck comfort and security both for helm and guests, and an interior of extraordinary volume for unusually spacious cabins.

“To achieve this while maintaining the in-water performance now expected quite naturally of Contest, we have raised the hull’s outer edges for more boat interior while also looking for more hull stability. We put more draft into the aft sections, too, and also widened the waterline a little. Nothing too extreme, just for the right transitions and reducing wetted surface.

“As with the also new Contest 50CS, we again wanted to avoid the sharp lines you see in some production yachts just following trend. Then, with this additional stability, we also managed a bigger, taller rig so the sailing doesn’t have to stop in light winds. These yachts will perform equally in lighter and stronger winds. That has to be good … especially in the Mediterranean.

“And the look is really nice, the balance just right while in physical terms when we heel we have less trim, less drag, and less moment in the waves. So, it is smoother, more comfortable. And this makes the sailing so enjoyable.”

“THIS ALL ADDS EVEN MORE INTO THE BROAD MENU OF CHOICE THAT OWNERS CAN ENJOY IN THE PERSONALISATION OF THEIR YACHT INTERIORS WITH WHICH, OF COURSE, WE ARE DELIGHTED TO HELP.”

INSIDE AND OUT

Gillian Brown of Wetzels Brown Partners says: "It is always fascinating working with the Contest team on new model introductions. I would say the Contest 49CS is no exception, but in a novel sense it is, being the first aft-cockpit model at this size for the shipyard.

"And the beauty is while creating a fabulous twin aft-cabin and forward master suite arrangement, we have managed to retain so many of the beneficial attributes of the more familiar centre cockpit models. So while we have two lavish, tall and wide aft cabins for children and guests, we have still the superb two-sided galley. Forward in the bow, the bright, light and wide-footed master suite is also a joy, and as throughout the yacht offers impeccable detailing and comforts.

"There's much new featuring throughout from newly configured cabinetry to textured finishes of not just the soft furnishings but even the timber panelling, drawing on that industry's fast developing new texturing technologies. "This all adds even more into the broad menu of choice that owners can enjoy in the personalisation of their yacht interiors with which, of course, we are delighted to help.

"As we've said before, our work is to create very special interiors, implementing the finest contemporary design that actually truly acknowledges the diverse realities of life aboard. We're all here to assist in making ownership better than special wherever and however you sail."

THE PERSONAL TOUCH

Arjen Conijn, third generation CEO of this family-owned shipyard and innovator, says, “While some semi-custom builders striving for savings are standardising their yachts more and more, we at Contest Yachts are different. And again in this new model launch, we show that the best way to help owners set out on their own personal voyage is to deliver exactly what they want, individually.

"And it was through disussion with owners eager for us to extend our aft cockpit offering that's so well suited to family sailing, that led to this great new interpretation of an age old concept. Thinking and dreaming together, great things can be achieved.

"That’s what we do. We always have. We call it building dreams together. And this wonderful new aft cockpit, twin aft cabin Contest 49CS could well be the dream of your dreams... we look forward to building it with you!"
