THE NEW

BIMINI HARDTOP

UNDERCOVER OPERATIONS UPDATE

‘All-weather protection’ may sound like a straightforward description for a bimini hardtop, but delivering a true best-in-class solution is anything but simple. Achieving this has been a significant undertaking for our design and engineering teams, who have devoted considerable time and expertise to the project. The result is now coming to life, with the system being introduced on both the newly launched 15-metre Contest 56CS and the European Yacht of the Year-winning 17-metre Contest 63CS. As the shipyard’s lead engineer Jan-Pieter Vredeveld says of this bimini project, “Surprising as it may be, this is actually among our most complex developments ever!” High praise indeed, considering the level of innovation Jan-Pieter has brought to numerous projects throughout his long career at Contest.

“Here, with the bimini such a prominent element it has to look not only good and in balance, it has to perform perfectly, and with all the functions we are incorporating into it, that’s a demanding wish list and a lot of work to come true!” Built as a single-piece structure in pre-preg carbon fibre, the bimini delivers exceptional strength, rigidity, and weight efficiency. Its integral arch spans the cockpit, flowing seamlessly into the forward coaming, while aligning with the rake of the windscreen – an advanced structural feature in its own right. Engineered to accommodate mainsheet loads via a single-point pad-eye, the structure has been rigorously designed and tested under Lloyd’s Register scrutiny. FEM analysis (Finite Element Method) has been applied to ensure it withstands extreme forces, such as those generated during Chinese gybes.

Helm visibility remains a priority, with clear sightlines to the mainsail supported by a glazed panel integrated into the aft section of the hardtop. Adjustable panels with extending blinds offer multiple shading options, while solar panels are integrated into the forward section. Alternatively, an opening canvas roof can be specified. So, if you’ve ever wondered about our undercover operations, the option is now yours to choose!
